Three Valuable I.T. Learning Opportunities

Information technology has found its way into almost everyone’s everyday life.  Our phones are computers and our computers can be phones.  In this versatile thriving community, IT knowledge is of the utmost importance if you hope to keep up.  A solid foundational knowledge of what Information Technology truly encompasses is a vital component to our learning capacity in this era.  With such a wide range of knowledge at our fingertips, self-administered education is the key.  By first learning the basics of your machine, you can then dip deeper and truly understand the vast world of informational technology.

BACK TO THE BASICS

It would surprise most young people to know just how little some of our older generation knows about basic computer functions, but we must remember that computers, and most definitely internet capability, are still relatively new to our world.  The first widespread internet capability only began a little over thirty years ago.

We have come a long way since then, but the technology is still rapidly maturing and changing on a daily basis.  Once you have learned the bare minimum to operate your computer, you will find that there are many websites that offer free online courses to broaden your foundational knowledge of your machine.

INTRO TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Your second stop along your journey should be to learn exactly what the term IT entails.  Merriam-Webster defines IT as, “the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data”.  In layman’s terms, IT is any technological force that processes information.  Therefore, you could conclude that almost every electronic you touch on a daily basis is linked to information technology.

The field of IT provides the ability for tremendous effectiveness in business production by keeping more thorough and updated records.  IT can be responsible for more secure safety mechanisms for your business or even simply in a family setting.  Firewalls and virus blockers would not be possible without the development of information technology.

THE BUSINESS OF OS

What does it mean when you read OS?  OS is simply a common acronym for the term “operating system”.  The operating system on your computer is responsible for processing everything you see on your computer screen.  To find out what OS your computer is running, simply click on the file folder entitled control panel from your start menu.  Then you will want to go into the system settings and your computer will tell you all you need to know from there.

Most people these days run the newest operating system, Windows 8, but the newest operating system is not always the best operating system for your personal needs.  Once again, do your research!

Depending on what your needs are, you will find that different OS cater to different demands.  For example, Windows 2000 is a strong OS for networking and business management.  Windows ME was more suited for home PC use.  Knowing your operating system will help you utilize your computer to its fullest potential.
